Grace Unfolding

Grace Unfolding: A Painting Led by The Divine

Some paintings begin with a specific intent or at least a vague sense of direction. Grace Unfolding was not one of them. This piece emerged from a place beyond thought - a soul-generated creation that came into being as I surrendered to The Divine and let the process take over.

It was August of 2019. I remember feeling a sense of urgency as I worked, moving quickly, almost furiously, as if the painting itself couldn’t wait to exist. Acrylics, inks, and clay-based paints became the mixed medium, and uncharacteristically, I found myself finger-painting at times—simply because I needed to get the paint on fast enough to keep up with whatever was unfolding.

At first, I wasn’t sure how the geometry would resolve. Would the forms clash? Would the movement feel disconnected? But to my amazement, it all found its rhythm. A large spiral form emerged, fluid yet structured, made up of numerous edges and angular shapes, each flowing seamlessly into the next. There was harmony in the contrast—soft and sharp, organic and geometric, effort and surrender. The painting did not have a title.

A year later, as I looked at the painting, it appeared as a calming vision and a reminder. As the unknown was unfolding in all our lives that year, I saw in this painting a message of trust: that even in uncertainty, I can lean into The Divine to lead my way. It took another couple of years for the title to emerge: Grace Unfolding

Looking at Grace Unfolding now, I see more than just the composition of the various chapters of life unfolding in sequence in space and time, one after the other. I see a lesson in trust, in allowing creation to happen without needing to control the outcome. Sometimes, the most profound beauty reveals itself when I step aside and let The Divine lead the way.
